Friendship & co-operation
Trade Relations
and Economic & Technical Cooperation
Since 1962, the complete-projects that China has helped Uganda to
set up include the Kibimba and Doho Rice Schemes, the Kampala Ice
Plant, methane-generating pits, the Foodstuff Porcelain Research
Center and the National Stadium. China also provided Uganda with
dump trucks, porcelain research equipment and other small-scaled
machining equipment and necessary accessories. Chinese companies
began contracting and service business in Uganda in 1987, mainly
covering housing projects, road and bridge construction. There are
10 Chinese companies running that kind of business in Uganda,
including the Sichuan International Economic and Technical
Cooperation Ltd. and Jiangsu International Economic and Technical
Cooperation.
Trade relations between China and Uganda started in 1960. In 2000,
the trade volume chalked up US$ 15.24 million. The export of the
Chinese side was US$14.40 million, and the import was US$ 837000.
China mainly exports machinery and electrical appliances, textiles,
garments, pharmaceuticals, porcelain and enamel products, glassware
and footwear to Uganda; and imports from Uganda coffee and plastics.
Uganda and China
governments through their co-operation formed Beijing Chenao Coffee Co.
Ltd. Chenao produces natural roasted coffee from Uganda.
China's long-awaited accession to the WTO means wider scope
for trade between Ugandans and Chinese.
